There is an old saying that says “it is better to give than receive.” That could very well be true for those who like to share their photos, videos, screenshots or comments with family, friends or strangers on social media. To do this requires that you select the app that you want to share with using a “sharesheet.” Android users have complained over the years about the time that it takes for the sharesheet to fully show all of the possible options. But those of you using Android 10 might have noticed improvements in the operating system’s sharesheet including the speed at which it loads on your phone.

Google also added what it calls People Shortcuts that allow users to share from names listed on their app’s contacts list. You can see a small icon of the particular app that will be used on the profile shown for each recommended contact.  In the video of his presentation, we can see Tsurkan explaining to developers what code needs to be added to their apps in order for Google to rank these contacts. He also explains how to set up the images of the material being shared that pops up at the top of the sharesheet; this shows the user clearly what it is that is being shared.

Not only Android users but developers are happy about this as well; previous implementations of the Android sharesheet were so poorly done that many developers chose to create their own share solution on their apps. Even Google is guilty of this too. For example, Google News sharesheet features a search bar at the top of the page, a row of people to share with and a row of apps underneath. Both rows move horizontally. The new sharesheet for Android 10 shows the URL of the content being shared, or an image of it. Underneath this there are four profiles from an app’s contacts list with another row showing four apps to share with. Scrolling up on the page will show remaining apps to share with, listed in Alphabetical order.
