A Galaxy Note 10-like display without the curved edges

Following in the footsteps of the premium Galaxy Note 10+, the upcoming Galaxy A71 will feature a massive 6.7-inch Infinity-O AMOLED display that pairs a centered punch hole with impressively thin bezels. Because of the smartphone’s mid-range positioning, though, Samsung is seemingly going to skip the curved edges.

The vertical camera setup that has graced most Galaxy A-branded phones this year is gone in favor of a much larger and wider rectangular module which incorporates an L-shaped layout for the four cameras. Reports suggest the Galaxy A71 will feature a 48-megapixel primary sensor and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle shooter accompanied by a dedicated Time-of-Flight sensor for more advanced portrait photography and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera, although it’s unclear what level of optical zoom will be supported. As per usual, an LED flash will sit alongside these. Additionally, a 32-megapixel front-facing snapper is to be expected.

The physical aspect of this mid-range smartphone is completed by a USB-C port on the bottom that’s joined by a speaker and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It also features a SIM card tray on the left, a volume rocker and power key on the right, and an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Here’s what can be expected on the inside

The Samsung Galaxy A70 and its revised sibling – the Galaxy A70s – both make use of the Snapdragon 675. Qualcomm is yet to announce a direct successor to this chipset and probably won’t do so until early 2020, meaning the Galaxy A71 might also feature the Snapdragon 675. If Samsung insists on a performance boost, however, the smartphone could opt for a slightly more advanced alternative, perhaps the Snapdragon 712 or even a Snapdragon 730-series offering.

Regardless of this, an upgrade to a minimum of 8GB of RAM is to be expected alongside at least 128GB of internal storage. The latter should be expandable via a microSD card slot which will probably sit inside the SIM tray mentioned above. 

Samsung’s Galaxy A71 should debut with Android 10 and One UI 2.0 straight out of the box. Rumors suggest that, like its predecessors, the phone will incorporate a massive 4,500mAh battery that supports 25W fast charging via the included accessory. Support for 4G LTE networks is to be expected too, although 5G compatibility seems very unlikely at this stage considering the costs that are associated with the necessary modems.

Samsung Galaxy A71 announcement and release date

Although yet to be confirmed, the Samsung Galaxy A71 will probably be announced at MWC 2020 in late February. There’s a strong chance it’ll be accompanied by the cheaper Galaxy A51 which also leaked recently.

If the company sticks to its current release strategy, it’s very possible a launch will be limited to the Indian market initially before the smartphones gradually reach international markets including Europe, where it should be priced in the region of €400. A launch in the United States isn’t guaranteed at this stage.
