Would you buy a $700 midrange 5G phone from Samsung or LG?
Samsung and LG are preparing to go downmarket with their 5G-equipped phones, reports Korean media today, introducing the nascent technology to their midrange portfolios. First in that line will be Samsung’s Galaxy A90 whose latest leaked renders tip at a pop-up selfie snapper, instead of the crazy rotating main one of the A80.
Albeit top-of-the-line in the A-series, The A90 is said to still command a comparatively affordable sub-$700 price when sized up with the $1300 Galaxy S10 5G. LG is reportedly also toying around with the introduction of a cheaper 5G-capable handset, perhaps even in the G-series, that will have a much lower price tag than the V50 ThinQ.
These handsets will be no slouches, either. The Galaxy A90 is expected to be unveiled after the Note 10, some time in the fall, but be equipped with a top-shelf Snapdragon 855 or the equivalent Exynos chipset, as those are the only ones that can get Qualcomm’s X50 or Samsung’s Exynos 5100 modems paired with them.
The A90 is also rumored to have a giant 4400 mAh battery, which it should if it wants to support the power-hungry 5G connectivity, with the pleasant side effect of much longer endurance on a charge compared with other Samsung phones with smaller batteries when the connection drops to 4G LTE.
All in all, the Galaxy A90 is shaping up to be a great midranger with an added 5G modem bonus, and LG is reportedly preparing a direct midrange competitor, too. This is why we wanted to ask you if you would get a midrange 5G phone even in this nascent state of the carriers’ 5G network.
