With the Xbox Live Rewards now retired, Xbox has begun transitioning to Microsoft Rewards, starting with the Xbox Insider Program. In beta form. And only in certain countries. Because nothing is ever easy.

Microsoft started Xbox Live Rewards over a decade ago as a way to ramp up engagement on the Xbox 360. The program worked like other loyalty and rewards programs by awarding points for online activities and purchases; accumulated points could then be used to get discounts on additional purchases.

Microsoft also had other rewards programs, like Bing Rewards, which awarded customers for using the software giant’s search engine. But that program was transitioned to Microsoft Rewards in 2016. And in early April, Microsoft emailed Xbox Live members to explain that it would do the same with Xbox Live Rewards.

That transition is still underway, but Microsoft ended all Xbox Live Rewards offer at the end of May. And the period for opting out of Microsoft Rewards ended yesterday. So all Xbox Live Rewards accounts will soon be transitioned.

This is a good thing: Instead of having multiple rewards programs, Microsoft now has a single program, and that means you can more easily earn points via engagement with various Microsoft products like Bing, Edge, Xbox, and the Microsoft Store.

“Getting rewarded is easy. Just search or shop with Microsoft. You can even earn points for having fun, like taking quizzes,” the Microsoft Rewards website explains. “[You can redeem your points for] movies, games, apps, and more. You can redeem your points for a variety of gift cards and sweepstakes entries. You can even donate your points to nonprofits.”

In this first phase of the transition, all Xbox Insiders in Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, and United Kingdom,” can now access Microsoft Rewards on their Xbox One by downloading the Microsoft Rewards Beta app. (You do so via the Xbox Insider Hub app, under “Insider Content.”) The app is coming to all countries that support Microsoft Rewards after the beta concludes in July. And it lets you join Microsoft Rewards if you’re not already a member, view Xbox-specific exclusive offers, redeem points for Microsoft Store gift cards, and check how many points you’ve earned.
