Google is about to make its own smart debit card. The company is working on an Apple Card-like payment card that will allow users to pay with a Google-branded debit card, reports TechCrunch.

The idea behind Google’s payment card fundamentally differs from that of the Apple Card, though. Google’s new debit card will work with the company’s existing Google Pay system, and Google will introduce several new features to the Google Pay app to allow users to manage their new Google-branded card. Apple’s Card, on the other hand, is a credit card.

The picture above shows off Google’s current design for the debit card, which the company is apparently working on with partners like Citi and Stanford Federal Credit Union. The debit card is a Visa card, and Google could make a Mastercard variant too.

Google is yet to officially launch the new debit card, and it’s not clear what the company’s release plans are for the new card.

The company will offer new features on its Google Pay app which will allow users to track their purchases, much like most modern mobile-only banking apps. Users will also be able to lock their card from the app, in case they lose the card. They will be able to use the same card online after re-ordering a physical one, as Google is implementing a system where the card number on the physical card is different from the digital one.

Details on the new card are pretty scarce at the moment. It’s unclear whether Google will offer customers any actual monetary benefits for using its new debit card as Apple does with the Apple Card. This isn’t the first time Google is making a debit card, though — the company tried something similar with the Google Wallet card, too.
